Lethbridge College x International Indigenous Speakers Bureau - Marketing & Communications Support

Riipen Case Study

The Company

International Indigenous Speakers Bureau (IISB) based in Saskatoon, Alberta, Canada was searching for learner interns to assist in the areas of marketing, communications, and journalism.

The Institution

Kris Hodgson-Bright is a faculty member in the Digital Communications and Media program at Lethbridge College in Alberta, Canada. This project was worked on by his second year digital journalism learners.

The Challenge

The International Indigenous Speakers Bureau (IISB) was in search of learner interns to learn about indigenous communication culture. Using this knowledge, the learner intern would help with creating a media piece concerning relevant social issues for publication with various media partners.

The Outcome

Based on the social issues that the IISB identified, a learner-writer researched and created a media piece for the organization to distribute. Learners were able to explore new styles of writing and established relationships with the industry partner. Instructor Kris was amazed at how engaged the learners were conducting in-depth research on their own.

"I think the learners have really appreciated learning about indigenous culture and have a greater understanding of having cultural awareness in mind when they are paired up with speakers." Kris Hodgson-Bright, Faculty, Lethbridge College
