What is your favorite flavor of chips?

What is your role at Riipen?

Lead Software Developer

What does your role focus on?

If you go to chances are I made what you are looking it (at least partially). More specifically, I do some programming, some administrative stuff, bug triaging, and I work closely with our Product Manager to help balance our team’s upcoming workload. The most exciting part of my job is that I get to solve real problems using a skill I love. I love telling computers how to move around 0s and 1s!

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

The panic that I might have overslept. And once in a while the smell of bacon… Panic and bacon… Really though I think having a lifestyle that I love. I have a job that I enjoy, an amazing fiancée, a supportive family, I have so much that gets me out of bed in the morning.

What’s a book you love, a quote, or something you think everyone should listen to or know?

Hmm, I read more technical books these days and I am guessing a recommendation for “Javascript: The good parts” won’t exactly hit home for a lot of people… I can vouch for the podcast S-Town. It is my favorite podcast and, no spoilers, it paints an “interesting” picture of small-town America.

In your words, what’s the best part of working at Riipen?

The best parts about working at Riipen are the autonomy and the immediate/large impact I have. I genuinely enjoy programming, it is a great blend of creativity and logic which perfectly satisfy my interests. My teammates are great too! We have worked together to foster a healthy/productive remote culture, which isn’t an easy task.

What’s your best piece of advice to a student?

Use your time at school to explore your options, but keep yourself grounded in reality. It also depends why you are in school. If you are learning about something you love, keep doing what you’re doing! If your goal is to come out of post-secondary with a job in your field try to get relevant work experience. This makes it a hundred times easier to land that job.
