The Future is Riipe
Another month down, or in startup life, what feels like three!
Kicking off this month’s review, this past week co-founder and director of academic partnerships, Dana Stephenson, was away in Boston representing Riipen as one of Canada’s top 27 innovative companies invited to participate in 48hrs in the Hub. 48hrs is an annual intensive two-day program of workshops, strategic partner visits, mentorship and networking in Cambridge and Boston.
Dana highlighted how it was great to see such an impressive group of companies from across Canada in Boston all for the same reasons – network with like-minded entrepreneurs leading rapidly growing ventures, gain visibility in the Boston Business and Investment Community, and of course compete for one of the three awards; Coolest Technology, Most Engaging Pitch, and Most Likely to Raise Investment. To our excitement, Riipen took home Most Likely to Raise Investment awarded by the Consulate General of Canada at the Microsoft New England R&D (NERD) Centre in Boston!
While in Boston, Dana also paid a visit to some of Riipen’s top academic clients in the area. This included Northeastern University, Boston University and Suffolk University where we’re working with forward-thinking faculty and staff to bridge the skills gap by pushing the limits of experiential learning. Boston is one of our fastest growing markets and with over 50 higher-ed institutions attracting the biggest names in industry looking to recruit top talent, it’s no wonder. We look forward to seeing all our friends in Boston again very soon!
Welcome To The DMZ
The DMZ at Ryerson University officially turned a whole dog-year-old, or as we humans know it, lucky number 7! Being one of the top-ranked business incubators in North America, and the third in the world, that’s right, the world, the DMZ has been instrumental in getting Riipen off the ground! In 7 years, the DMZ has grown more than 280 companies that have raised over $300 million and created more than 2600 jobs.
Riipen started at the DMZ in February of 2016 – what already feels like a lifetime ago! It’s been rose-colored glasses reflecting on the early days working at the DMZ as the 3 musketeers – that being Riipen, the DMZ and of course TWG (The Working Group). With TWG having helped build both Riipen 2.0 and DMZ 2.0, it’s been especially exciting as we’ve been able to learn and grow together! Although we’ve been through many accelerators (more than you can count on two hands – another post to come) our relationship with the DMZ continues – largely due to the amazing people that make up the DMZ team. Happy birthday DMZ and here’s to another 7!
Summer Heating Up
Last up in this month’s review, we’re thrilled to announce our invitation to Metabridge Live 2017. To get you up to speed, Metabridge is a non-profit organization helping accelerate the best and brightest high growth technology start-ups in Canada. This year, the program had over 160 applications and through a rigorous review period, the top 15 companies were invited to participate.
This year, we’ll get the chance to be mentored by Catherine Courage, VP of ads and commerce at Google; Santiago Solanas, VP Southern Europe at Cisco; and Jennifer Carolan, co-founder and GP of Reach Capital. We can’t wait and trust the experience will be well worth it! We’ll be sure to keep you posted on the outcomes!
Until next month… #stayriipe
